2025 Tariff Changes & How They Relate to Amazon Sellers

If you import goods to sell in bulk, some of this may be for you.

Donny vs China

Key Policy Changes that Could Impact Your Amazon Business

1. De Minimis Rule Overhaul

What changed: The $800 duty-free threshold no longer applies to products under Sections 201, 232, and 301.

Impact on sellers:

  • Small shipments of affected goods now face duties, increasing costs
  • Previously exempt products like steel, aluminum, and Chinese imports now incur tariffs regardless of shipment value
  • Just-in-time inventory strategies are now more expensive

2. Chinese Import Tariffs Reinstated

What changed: A 10% tariff on $300B of Chinese imports was reinstated, and Chinese goods are now completely excluded from de minimis eligibility.

Impact on sellers:

  • Private-label brands sourcing from China face immediate cost increases
  • Amazon’s own data shows 25% of its first-party inventory comes from China
  • Third-party sellers using Chinese suppliers now face up to 17.5% in combined tariffs

3. New Compliance Requirements

What changed: More stringent HTS code requirements and increased scrutiny of supply chains, especially for Chinese goods.

Impact on sellers:

  • Misclassification can result in penalties up to $10,000 for negligence
  • Customs clearance delays are extending lead times and increasing storage costs
  • Enhanced documentation requirements create additional administrative burden

What to do now?

For third-party Amazon resellers, the most critical action is to review your supplier costs and update your pricing strategy accordingly, as wholesalers will likely pass these tariff increases on to you. Consider diversifying your product catalog to include items sourced from non-Chinese manufacturers to protect your business from further tariff volatility.

Amazon 3P Seller Share at All-Time High 62%

Amazon’s marketplace continues to evolve as third-party sales reach an all-time high.

Amazon’s third-party sellers now account for a record 62% of all units sold. The rise comes as Amazon continues to terminate vendor agreements with many businesses, effectively pushing them toward the third-party marketplace model. (direct-to-consumer)

This shift creates new category opportunities for sellers as Amazon reduces its first-party retail business. You won’t be directly competing with Amazon as a seller as much.

The Long Game: Why Amazon Beats Temu

In a survey conducted to compare consumer perceptions of Temu and Amazon, it was revealed that while 53% of the respondents shopped on Temu in the last year, only 5% trust the platform.

Your average Temu shopper:

So despite Temu being viewed as a cost-effective alternative to Amazon, it’s hounded by trust issues, slow-as-molasses shipping, and concerns over product authenticity.

Amazon, on the other hand, is riding high with an 87% trust rating (with 75% of the respondents having shopped at Amazon in the past year).

Temu also looks to have a tough time ahead with Amazon countering its opening volley with competitive pricing strategies, and potential tariffs possibly killing its low-cost advantage (which is the only advantage it probably has now over Amazon).

Our prediction?

Amazon by knockout.
