Every other week, we share quick bites of Amazon seller news, tips, and other goodies. Here is a quick roundup of seller snacks to munch on:
Trump Pump for Ecomm?
Love him or hate him, this dude will be at the helm again for the next four years:
Bitcoin is already surging. Will we see a similar surge in online spending via mass marketplaces?
EcomCrew came up with an interesting forecast which gives us an idea of what to expect:
- Local Ecommerce to Gain from Trump’s “America First” Policy – US-based sellers and local ecommerce platforms are expected to benefit as domestic enterprises are prioritized under this policy. Different story though for cross-border sellers, as they may face new challenges like stricter localization requirements and greater emphasis on local fulfillment services.
- Increased Tariffs and Rising Product Costs – again, cross-border sellers are impacted, as increased tariffs on imports especially from China will make it hard for them to price competitively. In the short term, this means decreased margins for cross-border sellers, and in the long term, consumers may see prices go up.
- Rising Logistic Costs and Supply Chain Challenges – logistic services may see a surge in demand, as sellers anticipate increased tariffs and rush their shipments. This would cause spikes in shipping and storage costs. There may also be delays and increased risk in international shipping due to stricter customs inspections, potential port congestion, and revised transportation policies.
- Currency Fluctuations and Profit Margins – if Trump pursues policies that will devalue the US dollar, cross-border sellers may see reduced profits due to unfavorable exchange rates. However, a weaker dollar could boost consumer spending, causing increased sales volume to offset reduced profits.
- Investigation on Amazon’s Monopoly to Continue – While Lina Khan may be on the chopping block due to Big Tech’s dislike for her (Elon Musk has called for her firing), Trump isn’t a fan of Bezos or Amazon either, and has openly declared Amazon to be a monopoly.
Let’s hope that the average household starts to rebound from the hardships over the past few years and we get another 2019 explosion in ecommerce growth.
Amazon Haul is Set to Compete with Temu, Shein…
…for the bargain shoppers that probably care nothing about quality. Sigh.
Just before the BFCM shopping madness begins, Amazon launched its new low-priced storefront, Amazon Haul, designed to compete with Temu and Shein.
Here’s what we know about Amazon Haul:
The Core Offering:
- Mobile-only service offering products under $20, with prices starting at $1.50 for items like shoes, jewelry, and home decor
Shipping & Cost Structure:
- Free shipping on orders over $25 (otherwise $3.99 fee)
- Volume discounts: 5% off orders over $50, 10% off orders over $75
- 1-2 week standard delivery time
- 15-day returns for purchases over $3
- Protected by Amazon A-Z guarantee
There are some REAL industry concerns here too:
- Potential alienation of existing sellers due to rising Amazon fees
- Introduction of direct marketplace competition
- Low revenue potential threatening small business sustainability
This probably won’t be helping America’s local economy any time soon…
What the World Needs Now Is Love, Sweet Love
Amazon just dropped its 2024 Christmas ad, and it’s another heartstring tugger.
Jo Shoesmith, Amazon Global Chief Creative Officer says:
‘Midnight Opus’ is a story that celebrates the joy of doing something special for the people in your life. I think we all know how wonderful it feels to be the recipient of even the smallest act of kindness – whether that be a thoughtful gift or an encouraging word – and we wanted to bring that ineffable emotion to life.’
Midnight Opus will run in the US from November 18 throughout December.
