$12.7 Billion for Prime Day
Did your sales blast to the moon this past week? Consumers purchased more than 375 million items during last week’s Prime Day event. Let’s hope they all arrive safe and sound.

- Prime members purchased over 375 million items worldwide and saved more than $2.5B on several deals.
- The average customer spend rose to $54.05 from $52.26 last year.
- According to Adobe Analytics, online shoppers used 20% more “buy now, pay later” credit than they did last year. They used more than $927M from BNPL lenders on July 11, accounting for 6.5% of all orders placed that day.
- Home, Fashion, and Beauty were the top-selling deal categories.
- Adobe Analytics also reported that Amazon app usage soared during Prime Day. Prime Day 2023 saw a whopping 455% increase in installs compared to Prime Day 2022.
- Marketplace Pulse reported that Prime Day-related content in TikTok got hundreds of millions of views over the two-day event. Videos tagged with #primeday, #primeday2023, and #amazonprimeday2023 were viewed at least 400 million times on TikTok in a span of 48 hours.
We hope you got a nice slice of that pie.
Jump on Sourcing Back-to-School Items
Amazon recently debuted its 2023 back-to-school campaign video featuring “Fresh off the Boat” actor Randall Park.
The campaign encourages parents to spend less on school supplies by taking advantage of Amazon’s Back-to-School shopping guide.
According to an annual survey, back-to-school spending this year is expected to reach $41.5B – up from $36.9B last year.
It might be worth it to start combing through sales and deals from big box stores for school supplies, and maybe even creating some unique bundles of commonly used items.
GiftAMeal Wins Amazon’s 2023 Business Grant
GiftAMeal, a mission-driven local marketing program for restaurants that has provided over 1 million meals to families in need, was chosen as the grand prize winner of Amazon’s 2023 Business Grant. Besting 15 other semi-finalists, GiftAMeal won the $25,000 grand prize for its hunger-fighting program.
Regarded as one of the most innovative and disruptive businesses in the US, GiftAMeal runs a cause marketing program which turns restaurant photos into food. The program is free for restaurant patrons and is funded by restaurants as a form of philanthropic marketing.
“We are extremely grateful to be named the winner of Amazon’s Business Grant this year. We plan to use these funds to support our mission to get GiftAMeal in as many states as possible,” says Andrew Glantz, Founder & CEO of GiftAMeal. “This accomplishment is immensely important to our company, and it would not have been possible without the support and dedication of our wonderful team.”
Pretty awesome!

Amazon Competitors Shein & Temu in Hot Water “Copying Entire Amazon Storefronts”
Emerging Amazon competitors Shein and Temu will find themselves entangled in tough legal battles in the coming months.
A lawsuit filed by three designers in a California court accuses Shein of maintaining its market edge by engaging in “egregious” copyright infringement. The three designers claim that their product designs were stolen, copied, and sold by the Chinese fast-fashion site.
What makes this lawsuit particularly damaging is that it qualifies as a RICO case because it claims that Shein runs a business model in which copyright infringement is an integral part of its efforts to produce 6,000 products daily for its customers.
Meanwhile, a number of copyright infringement lawsuits alleges that Temu sellers are now copying entire Amazon storefronts and listings, causing the sales of affected Amazon sellers to significantly decline.
According to some Amazon sellers, they have discovered that their products are being sold very cheaply in Temu, and that the sellers of these imitations have also copied their product photos, descriptions, and keywords from their Amazon listings.
It will be interesting to observe how these lawsuits are going to affect Shein and Temu, both of which have been making an aggressive run in challenging Amazon’s ecommerce supremacy. Stay tuned.
